BY FREE TIMES

WEDNESDAY 3

Wednesdays are for peerless pianists! We told you last week, and we’ll tell you again: Phillip Bush is a badass, and he plays tonight’s Southern Exposure New Music Series concert at the University of South Carolina School of Music Recital Hall. Read more about it on page 25.

Wednesdays are for theater festivals! The University of South Carolina Lab Theatre is hosting one that kicks off today; the arts section has the pertinent details on page 24.

Wednesdays are for meta-cinema! Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as himself in JCVD, which opens tonight at the Nickelodeon Theatre. The meta-crime-comedy finds the Muscles from Brussels kicking ass and taking names, of course, but also musing on the nature of celebrity and fame. No, really. The shrewd satire screens at 8:30 p.m., following the final screenings of Humboldt County; call 254-3433 or visit nickelodeon.org for more information.

Königskinder? Hell, we hardly knew 'er! The Three Redneck Tenors visit the Newberry Opera House on Monday.

THURSDAY 4

Thursdays are for the airing of grievances! True, Festivus isn’t until Dec. 23, but if you had any trials and tribulations during this year’s voting cycle, now’s the time to tell someone about it: The South Carolina Progressive Network hosts a town hall meeting on voting reform at 5:30 p.m. at the Richland County Council Chambers. Data and ideas collected at the meeting will be used to ensure that future elections run smoothly; call 808-3384 or visit scpronet.com for more information.

Thursdays are for buying art! At a loss for what to get for that art lover on your holiday shopping list? Buck up, consumer, as you have your choice of two local art sales today: The University of South Carolina Art Department hosts its annual holiday sale at the McMaster Gallery from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Midlands Clay Arts Society sets up shop at Gallery 80808 from 1 to 7 p.m. Call 777-4236 or 252-6134, respectively, for more information.

FRIDAY 5

Fridays are for Festivus! Again, Festivus proper isn’t until Dec. 23, but Five Points is celebrating regardless; it kicks off its Five Points Festivus today with a parade at 6 p.m. and an Airing of Grievances Tour of bars and restaurants at 9 p.m. The parade is free, but the tour will set you back $5. Call 748-7373 or visit fivepointscolumbia.com for more information. (Chew on This! also has more info on page 37.)

Fridays are for The Nutcracker! Though we never met the man, Eight Days likes to think that Tchaikovsky would find the Columbia Classical Ballet’s unique interpretation of the yuletide classic to his liking. The troupe opens its run of The Nutcracker at 7:30 p.m. at the Koger Center; tickets range from $5 to $32; call 251-2222 or visit columbiaclassicalballet.org for more information.

Fridays are for local films! The brainchild of local auteur Bubba Cromer, The Hills Have Thighs possesses an outrageous cast of characters from a closeted homosexual hillbilly to an Obama-obsessed liberal named Tree-Tree with a penchant for “Negrobelia” to a colorful variety of big-boned ladies with even larger attitudes. And that’s just scratching the surface; knowing Cromer, the film’ll be a hoot; The Hills Have Thighs debuts at the Nickelodeon Theatre at 8 p.m.; call 254-3433 or visit nickelodeon.org for tickets and more information.

Fridays are for musicals about popular political wives! Don’t cry for Trustus Theatre, Columbia; it debuts its production of Evita on its main stage at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25; call 254-9732 or visit trustus.org for more information.

SATURDAY 6

Saturdays are for lighting up your life! Yes, loyal Eight Days reader, Debby Boone will be peforming her Christmas Memories concert at 3 and 8 p.m. at the Newberry Opera House, and that means loads of classic carols. But we’d like to think that if you asked nicely enough, she’d belt out “You Light Up My Life” for old times’ sake. Tickets for the 3 p.m. show are $32.50; the 8 p.m. show will knock you back $37.50. Call 276-6264 or visit newberryoperahouse.com for more information.

Saturdays are for second chances! If you missed Young@Heart the first time it came to the Nickelodeon Theatre, your chance for redemption is at hand. It screens for free at noon at The Nick, thanks to Harmony Care Hospice. Call 254-3433 or visit nickelodeon.org for more information.

SUNDAY 7

Sundays are for benefit concerts! The Red Bank United Methodist Church hosts the annual Christmas at Red Bank benefit concert for Lexington Interfaith Community Services tonight; the music section has more on page 54. And students from the Columbia Arts Academy will rock everything between Mozart to Motorhead at the Columbia College Spears Music Arts Center at 1 p.m.; admission is free, but donations — which are highly encouraged — benefit Pets Inc. Call 787-0931 or visit columbiaartsacademy.com for more information.

Sundays are for buying more stuff! Ever thought about swiping a movie poster from the Nickelodeon Theatre? Or a puppet from the Columbia Marionette Theatre? Well, dear reader, now’s your chance to get one without resorting to subterfuge: The two arts institutions hold a Puppet and Poster Sale from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Columbia Marionette Theater and Puppetry Center. Call 252-7366 or visit nickelodeon.org for more information.

Sundays are for ye olde music! Verily, yon Columbia Museum of Art goes all baroque on thine ass at yon Art of Music Series, with baroque minstrels performing The Music of Lord Middleton’s England at 3 p.m. And zounds! Such a performance costs nary a farthing with
museum admission or membership! Forsooth!

MONDAY 8

Mondays are for rednecks! It’s Dale Jarrett meets Placido Domingo, coon-hunting meets Jose Carrera and Pabst Blue Ribbon meets Luciano Pavarotti as the Three Redneck Tenors take the stage at the Newberry Opera House. Scream out a request for “Freebird.” We dare you. Tickets are $35 for the 8 p.m. show and $25 for the 3 p.m. matinee; call 803-276-6264 or visit newberryoperahouse.com for more information.

TUESDAY 9

Tuesdays are for regenerative agriculture! The University of South Carolina Green Quad Learning Center hosts “Healthy Soil, Healthy Planet: Regenerative Agriculture as a Solution to Climate Change” at 7 p.m.; the discussion is led by Rodale Institute CEO Tim LaSalle. Trust Eight Days, that’s cool. Admission is free; call 777-1994 for more information.

WEDNESDAY 10

Wednesdays are for string quartet tributes to saxophone colossi! The Turtle Island String Quartet has, according to the All Music Guide, “ the chops, the guts, the soul, the spirit and the taste to take on the musical legacy of John Coltrane — what more could anyone want?” Frankly, Eight Days can’t think of much more to ask from the quartet, which won the 2007 Grammy for Best Classical Crossover Album for A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane. Mmm ... string quartet tributes to Coltrane! The Turtle Island String Quartet comes to the Newberry Opera House at 8 p.m.; tickets are $35. Call 276-6264 or visit newberryoperahouse.com for more information.
