8 Days a Week
Plus: Expecting Goodness Short Film Festival Tuesday

Every time Trustus Theatre hosts its annual Vista Queen drag pageant, Eight Days gets Queen’s “Killer Queen” stuck in our head. All that is to say: The 15th installment of the pageant, dubbed The Year of the Crystal, features more high heels, fake nails and hairspray than an episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and begins at 6 p.m. (Eight Days feels compelled to remind you at this time that Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott was the first Vista Queen.) Dynamite with a laser beam, guaranteed to blow your mind, any time: tickets are $40; call 254-9732 or visit trustus.org for more.

The use of South Carolina’s two state airplanes became a flashpoint of controversy during budget talks last week — which ended with state senators voting to sell them. Controversy over the planes flared up in February when
The State reported Clemson University was the heaviest user of state-owned planes. It sparked a legislative debate about whether college football programs should be using the state planes to recruit players.

Girls Rock is, when boiled down to its essence, about volume. But not just about the loudness of electric guitars and drum kits, or even the creative process of writing a song — it’s about volume on a much more profound level. As Kristin Morris, one of the two co-founders of the Columbia branch of the rock camp (along with Shannon Donohue), says, “the heart of Girls Rock is using music education and music performance as a vehicle for social change.”

Jake's Bar & Grill occupies 2112 Devine St., home of the legendary Columbia rock club Rockafellas. On the weekend of May 17-17, Jake's hosted a Back to Rockafellas' weekend. Photos by Christian Barker.

After comparing a pint of the Sacred Heart to a pint of the Sacred Heartier, I asked the Conquest guys how things are coming along with their plans to open a tasting room. Rather than just tell me, they let me have a preview tour the next morning.
